Ondine Biopharma Corporation (the "Company", TSX/AIM: OBP) today announced that it has signed a comprehensive, multi-year research and development agreement with UCL Biomedica Plc to develop additional applications to prevent and treat infectious diseases using Photodynamic Disinfection (PDD) technology.
One of the key programs under this research and development agreement is the use of PDD for the prevention and treatment of diseases caused by methicillin/multiple-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). Nearly two million patients each year in the US contract infections while in hospital (US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention). Over 95% of patients with S. aureus infections do not respond to first-line antibiotics, and the mortality rate associated with MRSA bacteremia exceeds 45%.
"We believe that our PDD technology can be utilized to fight antibiotic- resistant microorganisms (also known as "superbugs") without contributing to the problem of antibiotic resistance," said Nicolas Loebel Ph.D., Ondine's Chief Technical Officer. "This research and development agreement with UCL Biomedica Plc allows us to leverage our experience with Periowave(TM), the groundbreaking PDD treatment for periodontal disease, as well as several years of prior research at UCL into potent anti-MRSA phototherapeutics."
Antimicrobial resistance is rapidly increasing in bacteria found in both community and hospital derived infections. Resistance formation is linked to overuse of antibiotics in both humans and animals. Recently, patients with no known risk factors or exposure to hospital environments have reported serious MRSA infections, pointing to the steady increase in incidence of the pathogen within the general community.
Under the terms of this agreement, the Company is committed to funding an aggregate of $958,000 over three years on the research and development programs undertaken during this period. In exchange, Ondine will have the exclusive option to acquire from UCL Biomedica Plc exclusive worldwide rights to any inventions for the prevention and treatment of infections resulting from this research and development agreement.
About Periowave(TM) and Photodynamic Disinfection
Periowave(TM) is a Photodynamic Disinfection system developed by Ondine that utilizes low-intensity lasers and wavelength-specific, light-activated compounds to specifically target and destroy microbial pathogens and reduce the symptoms of disease. The compounds are generally topically applied and one or more lasers are used to activate the compounds and complete the disinfection. The Photodynamic Disinfection technologies were developed by Professor Michael Wilson and colleagues at the Eastman Dental Institute, University College London, and licensed to Ondine by UCL Biomedica Plc, University College London. UCL BioMedica Plc (a wholly owned subsidiary of University College London) aims to generate income and create capital value for UCL through the commercial exploitation of the bioscience research base at UCL and its associated Institutes. Additional information about Periowave(TM) is available at www.periowave.com.
